Anchor Text

What is Anchor Text?

Anchor text, sometimes know as link label or link title, is the visible text that is displayed as part of a link. In the following example, the anchor text is the word “here“. Anchor text gives web users informationĀ aboutĀ the destination of a link.

The link to Blue Fountain Media’s homepage would look like this:

<a href="http://www.bluefountainmedia.com/">Blue Fountain Media's homepage</a>

Links are usually differentiated from regular text by appearing in a different color (most commonly blue) and are oftentimes underlined. You’ll also notice that when you place your cursor over the anchor text of the link, your mouse will turn into the familiar hand icon.

Anchor text is an important element in search engine optimization campaigns, because it provides important clues to search engines about the content of a page.
