What is Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality (AR) is a term used to describe a combination of physical and virtual reality in which our live, real-world environment is enhanced or combined with computer-generated content. This can include content like images, video, or sounds. The content is often interactive and has recently been used in an increasing amount of marketing and advertising.
Augmented Reality Meets Mobile Apps
Some mobile applications and games have adopted the use of Augmented Reality to enhance user experience.
Layar, an Augmented Reality mobile browser, allows users to download the browser to their mobile phone to view various interactive AR content through the devices camera. The software can actually recognize objects and place digital content on top of them.
Esquire Magazine Augmented Reality Issue
In December 2009, Esquire magazine released its first ever Augmented Reality issue. The issue featured content and advertisements that were brought to life on the computer screen when placed in front of a a web camera (after a specific program was downloaded).
Transformers Promotional Augmented Reality Program
In order to promote the second installment of the Transformers series, Paramount Pictures released an augmented reality program that, when used with a webcam, made subjects appear to be Transformer robots.
