What is Bounce Rate?
Bounce Rate is a measurement of how many visitors leave a website after visiting only the page they originally landed on. In other words, a bounce occurs when a visitor views only a single page and then leaves without taking any action or viewing any other part of the site.
Improving Bounce Rate
Upon landing on a website, a visitor will ask themselves the following key questions:
Am I in the right place? Is this what I was looking for?
Answer this question with clear messaging immediately. With the short attention span of most online visitors, your website only has a few seconds to grab their attention and tell them that they are in the right place. This will result in visitors navigating to other pages and ultimately a lower bounce rate.
Measuring Bounce Rate
Market Motive co-founder Avinash Kaushik discusses Successful Web Analytics Approaches and bounce rate. He believes that KPI (Key Performance Indicators) isn’t enough to evaluate performance since every business is different.
“Here’s the data, here’s an effective way for you to navigate the data, you figure out what’s best for you.”
However, when it comes to measuring bounce rate, it takes a little more than that. Most website traffic comes and goes instantly. Measuring bounce rate at the site level, core acquisition strategies, top entry pages, and landing pages (AdWords) will help you make informed decisions about your business.
