What is a Domain?
A domain is a hostname that represents a numeric IP address on the internet and easily identifies a website by a name instead of having to use a long string of numbers. Domain name registrars, such as Godaddy, allow domain names to be registered, managed, and transferred to new owners.
Top Level Domains (TLD’s)
Top level domains are at the top of the hierarchical domain name system and include .com, .org, .net and many others. They are managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). There are also country code top-level domains (ccTLD), which are reserved for specific countries.
Domains and SEO
Domain names have a significant impact on SEO. An important factor is the keywords that are contained within the domain, because these are typically strongly related to the content of a website. The ideal domain name would contain a website’s keywords, and also be memorable and brandable. The age of a domain and its accompanying link profile are also influential domain name factors.
