The Best Error Pages on the Web
Chief Marketing Officer Alhan Keser quoted in Wall Street Journal article
Anyone who has spent enough time online has at one point reached a dead end – known in Internet parlance as a 404 page.
So what causes them? Web designers are coming up with all kinds of creative and funny answers to give people who arrive at the unfortunate destination.
Some are alleging the page was murdered – perhaps by Col. Mustard in the billiard room with a rope. Others are blaming the economy. The page might just be out of a job. Still others suggest that the user is just on the wrong track — lost in the labyrinthine subway system of Internet tubes.
“It’s a chance to be geeky and just do something fun,” said Alhan Keser, chief marketing officer for Blue Fountain Media. “What’s a better place than a 404 page?”
Blue Fountain’s offering is a game of Pac-Man. After all, an arcade game is probably more fun than what you were looking for in the first place, right?
It’s not all fun and games, though. Mr. Keser said getting a little creative on a 404 page does have some value for clients of Web designers. He said every page, even a 404 page, is an opportunity to build a relationship with customers.
