Weekly Marketing Round-Up: Going Global Edition

Hello and welcome to another Five for Friday. Read on for the best in what we've found in the headlines this week!

Pandora Unveils 3 New Ad Units

Pandora, the preferred music-streaming service of 71 million monthly users, has added three new ad formats to its growing stable of offerings.

Designed to help the platform ward off competitors, dynamic audio, sequential audio, and short-form audio units are now available.

Dynamic audio ads can be personalized based on factors like age, location, gender, weather and genre; sequential audio ads can be deployed to tell a story using multiple ads; and short-form audio ads are built around ad spots that are between 4- and 10-seconds in length.

BuzzFeed Launches “Reviews” Portal

News favorite BuzzFeed has quietly launched a new site that recommends products to readers.

Though not formally announced, BuzzFeed Reviews covers categories like “tech,” “beauty,” “home,” “lifestyle,” and “deals,” and also expands the publisher's affiliate business.

Articles are displayed in a tiled format and accompanied by a product image. A simple click reveals price, key features, and a list of buying options, with direct links to retailers like Amazon, Target and Walmart.

Facebook’s VOD Platform Goes Global

Watch, Facebook’s ad-supported video-on-demand platform, is now available to audiences around the world.

Launched last year, the Network has worked long and hard to attract a higher caliber of content creators, winning over Major League Baseball, Jada Pinkett Smith, VOX and Group Nine Media in the process.

According to highly-contested data provided by Facebook, more than 50 million U.S. consumers access Watch each month on platforms like iOS, Android, Apple TV, Samsung Smart TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox One, and Oculus TV.

WEF Offers View of Social Media Universe

An infographic published by the World Economic Forum and the Visual Capitalist puts into perspective the global reach and impact of social media’s giants.

Illustrating diversity, the platforms are ranked according to the number of active monthly users. Not surprisingly three of top four are Facebook properties, with YouTube rounding out the top five.

“Facebook is a behemoth," said Nick Routley, creative director at Visual Capitalist. “But adding in the other platforms run by Mark Zuckerberg paints a clear picture of who controls the social media in 2018.”

Simultaneous Multi-Language Support Comes to Google Assistant

Besting Siri, Bixby, Alexa, and Cortana, Google Assistant can now speak two languages at once.

Currently supporting English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish, the new multi-lingual feature will soon expand to include more languages.

Using the LangID model to identify language and simultaneously deploy automatic speech recognition models, the service uses an algorithm to rank the confidence level of each speech-to-text language transcription in a matter of milliseconds on Android smartphones, Home speakers, and tablets.
