What is a 301 redirect?
The 301 redirect is an easy and efficient way to redirect a webpage. If you need to change a file name or move a page, the 301 redirect most often will not affect your search engine rankings for that page. A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to another allowing a different URL to be opened.
Think of the 301 redirect as as a “change of address form” most commonly found at the post office. If you move, you still want people to be able to find you.
Webpages are redirected for several reasons:
- Changing a domain name.
- Moving pages to a new domain.
- Merging two websites.
