What is Web Traffic?
Number of visits to a website, calculated in various ways depending on the traffic analysis program installed on a website and its configuration. Popular services include Google Analytics, Omniture, and Webtrends.
Measuring Traffic with Google Analytics
Google Analytics, will report a visit as the entering of a page on a website for the first time. This is reset after 30 minutes of inactivity, so one user could have multiple visits in the same day, but differs from pageviews.
Types of Web Traffic
Also known as natural traffic, organic traffic comes from search engines. Users type in specific keywords into a search box and click on relevant search results.
Paid traffic is traffic that is driven from online advertisement. Popular services include Google Adwords, Adsense, or Facebook.
There are two forms of direct traffic:
1. Visitors coming to your site by typing your websites URL into the browser
2. Visitors coming to your site through a bookmark they saved on their browser
This type of traffic comes from links placed on other websites. For example, a visitor clicks on link from Mashable that takes him directly to SEOMoz.
